A unique and experimental turn in the trajectory of our current tirade of dungeon synth and dark noise work, 'Ancient Glimmers' is a frostbitten, ephemeral embrace, awash with atmosphere, ambience, extravagant emotional sonics and lush, beautiful minimalist moments too.

Inspired originally by one-off tracks written and compiled over a few months, made at first for use in numerous dungeon synth compilations, my work post dungeon skate for some reason began morphing into a new direction, one marked more by catatonic swells of serious compositions, the looming knowledge of the seasons changing, personal changes and challenges, and the desire to make my mark in a new direction which I have so far left untapped.

The result is some of my dungeon synth styles of old coupled with a fresh take on the influence of winter synth, medieval fantasy synth, and a hint of dark ambience.

After over a year's experience getting to grips with the ins and outs of the dungeon synth style, and dabbling with numerous sub-genres along the way, this was less a conscious effort to go a different direction, than it was just letting go of my subconscious, desires and fears and just feeling my way through what my emotions told me to write. It's not perfect, and it's not something I agonised over or really stressed about making. It simply is.

This newfound musical freedom takes the form of a dark, mystical narrative surrounding an ancient, fabled and cursed artifact hidden within a forgotten crag of the mountains. It is winter. The listener is a magical knight of some renown, sent from his humble mage guild to the most dangerous of peaks, all to seek this horrific artifact... The legendary blade, River of Sorrows. The journey is perilous, lonely and full of dangerous pitfalls.

I didn't sit down and deliberately intend to make this into an album; it just sort of... happened. Much like everything in the universe and in life, I suppose. The overarching themes of this piece include loss, personal estrangement, the mystery of power and what the true nature of power really is, detaching from reality, seasonal change, and the calming wonder of letting the pitfalls of modern life be washed away by the cold, hard embrace of the elements.

This album was written in pieces over the course of 6 months. Originally written as a draft between Sept - Nov 2023, it ended up being almost entirety rewritten due to the collapse of a planned split album with another artist, who proved in the end to be fascist; ergo that never took place. Instead, many of the tracks written and inspired by nature and medieval fantasy were written between Jan - Feb 2024. The leftovers from this album will eventually be worked on and released as the second volume of 'Ancient Glimmers', coming Q2 2024.

Clocking in at over 50 minutes, and with the title track featured on the 'Winter Synth' compilation by the incredible Dungeon Squid Productions, this is a shot in the dark which packs a punch, as it combines swirling cacophonous blizzards from the outside, with the inner turmoil and trepidation within. Enjoy.
